Why are broilers weak or lethargic?

Weakness can come from many different problems. The fastest route to a useful answer is to compare the flock with its normal pattern and check the basic risk areas first.

Important: weakness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Severe weakness, neurological signs or increasing mortality warrant prompt veterinary assessment.

1. Water and feed access

Check that birds have reliable access to clean water and feed. Inspect drinkers and feeders for blockage, poor distribution, leaks and other equipment problems.

2. Temperature and air quality

Review heat, cold, ventilation, ammonia, litter and stocking conditions. Birds under environmental stress may become less active and feed differently.

3. Observe the whole flock

Look for changes in walking, breathing, droppings, drinking, feeding, posture and distribution. Note whether the problem affects a few birds or a large portion of the flock.

4. Review recent changes

Record recent vaccination, feed changes, movement, handling, weather changes, new birds or changes in management. Timing can help narrow the investigation.

5. Check growth and uniformity

Compare current weights or growth observations with farm records. Increasing unevenness can be an important signal that deserves investigation.

6. Consider health causes carefully

Multiple diseases and non-infectious conditions can cause weakness. Avoid assuming a specific disease from weakness alone. Use the flock history, examination and appropriate diagnostic support.

What farmers should record

Record age, mortality, feed and water intake, weights, environmental observations, visible signs and recent interventions. Good records make professional assessment much more useful.
