Why poultry farm records matter more than you think
A farm without records depends heavily on memory. A farm with consistent records can compare days, cycles and decisions — and start seeing patterns.
The minimum daily record set
- Number of birds alive, dead and culled
- Feed used or estimated feed intake
- Water intake where practical
- House temperature and notable environmental conditions
- Medication, vaccination or other interventions
- Unusual signs, behaviour or management changes
Why the trend matters
One day's number may not tell you much. A trend can. A gradual change in water intake, a sudden rise in mortality or a feed-use pattern that differs from previous days can tell you that the flock deserves closer attention.
Record the event, not just the number
If mortality increases, write what happened around it. Note weather, power interruptions, feed delivery, water problems, vaccination, movement, cleaning or other changes. Context makes the numbers useful.
Use records for the next cycle
At the end of a cycle, compare planned and actual costs, mortality, average weight, feed use and selling results. That comparison gives you a stronger starting point for the next budget and management plan.
Build a system you will actually use
Good records do not need to be complicated. Start with a simple daily sheet or digital form, make responsibilities clear and review the numbers regularly. Consistency beats complexity.
