Poultry biosecurity checklist for growing farms
Biosecurity is not one product or one day of cleaning. It is a set of routines that reduce the chance of pathogens being introduced, spread or carried between areas.
People & visitors
□ Control unnecessary visitorsKnow who enters the poultry area and why.
□ Keep movement deliberateAvoid moving from higher-risk or older groups into younger or more vulnerable flocks without appropriate precautions.
□ Make clean entry practicalProvide a clear process for footwear, clothing and hand hygiene appropriate to the farm.
Equipment & movement
□ Avoid sharing dirty equipmentClean and disinfect tools before moving them between houses where applicable.
□ Separate farm materialsKeep feed, equipment and other materials organized so unnecessary cross-movement is reduced.
Water & litter
□ Inspect drinkers dailyFix leaks and standing water quickly and keep drinking systems maintained.
□ Monitor litter conditionWet litter deserves attention because it can worsen hygiene and environmental conditions.
Cleaning & disinfection
Cleaning removes organic material; disinfection works best when surfaces have been properly cleaned and the selected product is used according to its label. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for dilution, contact time, safety and compatibility.
Make biosecurity measurable
Turn the checklist into a routine. Record cleaning dates, visitor movements, problems found and corrective actions. A system that is easy to repeat is more useful than a perfect procedure that nobody follows consistently.
